The Fathering Initiative
A fathering initiative at John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School is helping to strengthen the relationships between fathers, their children, and the school community. The project began as a humble idea to promote positive fathering behaviours, inspired by research from the national charity ‘The Fathering Project’. The concept evolved in early brainstorming meetings between a small group of staff and some enthusiastic dads to grow into a popular and exciting program.
The first event was a board game night held in Term 1 this year. With support from the school’s communications team, the event quickly sold out, affirming the demand for more father-child engagement activities. Building on this success, the group hosted a ten-pin bowling event in Term 2, where more than 75 people connected and enjoyed time together.
This term, the group will host a ‘Bike or Hike’ event along the Swan View Railway Heritage Trail for the primary school community at no cost to families. Financial backing from the Parents and Friends Committee has been crucial in making these activities accessible to all families in the School community. The dedication and commitment of the foundation group of fathers who volunteer their time to keep the momentum of this initiative going is another critical part of its success.
Looking ahead to 2025, the group, which has recently named themselves ‘The Explorers’, plans to expand its offerings with guest speakers, career showcases, camps, BBQs and more. Their dedication to strengthening father-child relationships and creating community connections has made a significant impact, highlighting the powerful role fathers and father figures play in shaping children’s lives.
