Spotlight on: Brad Evans

I am a country boy, having grown up in a small town in the wheat belt (Wyalkatchem), where, despite having a very fun and free-range upbringing, opportunities both educationally and otherwise were very limited due to the small size of the town. Inevitably, for many students in this situation, the next stop was boarding school. Although many people probably don’t always have the best time at boarding school, this was not the case for me, and it began my love affair with educational institutions and the sense of community that they provide.

This meant the pursuit of a teaching career, where I was fortunate to be appointed as a graduate teacher at Guildford Grammar School in 2004, commencing my teaching career as an Economics, Business, and Humanities Teacher. During my time at Guildford, I was afforded many professional opportunities in both boarding and the pastoral domains of the School, enabling me to undertake leadership roles as a Head of House and Head of Boarding, with a significant period as the Head of Senior School. I have also served as Acting Principal on a number of occasions. Beyond these roles, I have always maintained a commitment to getting outside of the classroom and office to engage with students and staff through sports coaching, camps, tours and co-curricular activities.

When not involved in school, I am the husband to my wife of 12 years, Bernie, and Dad to Harry and Grace who will be joining the GMAS community as students this year. Additionally, I proudly hold the title of Chief Walker and Nutritionist for Dusty, our overgrown labradoodle (although I’m not sure if Dusty would meet the enrolment requirements!).

Our family loves spending time outdoors, enjoying weekends and holidays away in the camper trailer, at the beach and participating in a wide variety of sports. Those who know me well would say I have an unhealthy passion for avidly supporting the Richmond AFL team.

I feel privileged as an educator because I am able to work with inspirational and energetic young people. Equally important, I am privileged to collaborate with like-minded colleagues who have chosen to undertake this important vocation. This vocation is built on a passion for seeing the talents of young people grow and providing them with support and care through a challenging but crucial and foundational stage of their life’s journey.
